Field Grading Composites Tailored by Electrophoresis—Part 3: Application to Power Electronics Modules Encapsulation

A series of three articles presents an innovative way to build advanced functionally graded materials (FGM) based on polymer/ceramic (epoxy/SrTiO3) composites tailored by electrophoresis for field grading in power electronics. In Part 3, this method is applied the context modules DBC substrate encapsulation. An evaluation FGM performances reported electrostatic simulations and breakdown voltage measurements encapsulated substrates. The results show a significant mitigation electric fringe at triple point while largely increased factor 2 compared neat epoxy. process enables use reinforcements HV electrical systems (e.g. tips coming from design), thus potential weak points, locally `self-heal' them in-situ. Such used paves next generation functionalized polymer high applications improving aging insulating system reliability.
